Pace explained: what minutes per kilometre really tell you

· 2 min read

Runners talk about pace, not speed. Learn what 6:00 per km means, how to find your easy pace and why it matters more than your fastest.

Runners rarely talk about speed in km per hour. They talk about pace: how many minutes it takes to cover one kilometre or one mile.

A pace of 6:00 /km means one kilometre every six minutes. At that pace, 5 km takes 30 minutes.

Pace and speed side by side

Pace per km Speed 5 km time
8:00 7.5 km/h 40:00
7:00 8.6 km/h 35:00
6:00 10 km/h 30:00
5:00 12 km/h 25:00
4:00 15 km/h 20:00

A lower pace number means you are faster.

Current pace and average pace

JogStats shows two paces while you record:

  • Current pace is how fast you are going right now, based on the last half minute. It jumps around on hills and at crossings.
  • Average pace is your whole run so far, without paused time. This is the number to compare between runs.

Find your easy pace

Most of your runs should be easy. Your easy pace is the pace where you can talk in full sentences. For many beginners it is between 7:00 and 8:30 /km, and that is completely fine.

Running easy most of the time is how runners at every level build endurance without getting hurt.

Splits

A split is your time for each kilometre or mile. Even splits mean you paced the run well. If your last split is much slower than your first, you probably started too fast.

Tip: try to make your last kilometre the fastest. It is a simple way to learn pacing.
